While it is possible to cut through concrete using a chisel, the most common way that concrete is cut through nowadays is to use a concrete saw. However, because the saw can cut through concrete, you'll also have to worry about the saw causing serious injuries if you're not careful.

Make Sure Everyone is Informed About Safety Precautions

Make sure that anyone operating the saw is informed about all safety procedures. You might think that a certain behavior is obviously a bad idea, but what might seem obvious to you may not be obvious to someone else.

Inspect the Saw

When you are changing blades, make sure that the saw is unplugged. Do not simply switch the saw off because the saw might turn on suddenly and cut you as you're changing the blade. The saw needs to be well-maintained, especially the guards.

Use the Right Blade

The right type of blade needs to be used for cutting through concrete. Also, you need to make sure that the blade is straight and sharp. The blade needs to be tight so that it doesn't come out of the machine.

Beware of Silica Dust

When dry cutting concrete, silica dust can be released into the air and be a health hazard for concrete contractors. You will need to make sure that the work area is properly ventilated and that you wear proper face protection to avoid inhaling the silica dust.

Fortunately, there are engineering controls that can be used to prevent the silica dust from becoming a problem, such as using a wet blade or a vacuum to remove dust from the room. The silica dust is most often a concern when you are cutting concrete with a diamond or abrasive blade. Breathing in the dust can lead to an incurable disease called silicosis.

Wear Protective Equipment

While you are cutting through concrete, debris might shoot up into your eyes. If you do not wear protective eyewear, you are more likely to suffer an injury. Wear a hard hat, hearing protection, visibility clothes, and protective footwear.

Hire Contractors

If you do not want to place yourself at risk when cutting through a concrete slab, one of the best options is to use a slab sawing service. They will use the techniques that will keep their workers the safest and you'll be able to focus on other aspects of your construction project.
